Bilateral relations across the western Indian Ocean reached a significant milestone as Somalia and South Korea hold talks to deepen maritime security and development cooperation during high-level diplomatic sessions in Mogadishu. Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hassan Mohamed Ali, received South Korea’s Ambassador to Somalia, Park Ji-Hyun, to discuss expanding strategic collaboration across key security and institutional sectors. The meeting highlighted a mutual commitment to safeguarding strategic shipping lanes along the Horn of Africa, enhancing public-sector capabilities, and promoting long-term economic resilience under the broader framework of the Korea–Africa partnership. Both representatives emphasized that maintaining secure, open maritime routes remains essential for regional trade, economic stability, and international anti-piracy efforts.
During the diplomatic exchange, Ambassador Park reaffirmed South Korea’s steadfast support for Somalia’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and institutional reform initiatives. The discussions focused on actionable capacity-building initiatives, including technical training for public-sector personnel, institutional governance support, and joint security framework development. Somali officials reiterated that bolstering national coast guard oversight and government institutions is vital for managing the nation’s extensive coastline amid ongoing regional maritime challenges. By expanding technical assistance and policy coordination, both nations aim to establish a durable framework for public administration, regional maritime domain awareness, and sustainable development across East Africa.
As South Korea continues to expand its diplomatic and economic engagement throughout the African continent, Somalia has emerged as a key regional partner in advancing maritime stability and economic growth. The dialogue reflects Somalia’s ongoing foreign policy strategy to diversify international partnerships, secure critical sea lines of communication, and modernize state institutions through multilateral cooperation. Moving forward, both governments agreed to maintain close diplomatic channels to implement shared development goals, ensure effective security coordination, and deepen the long-standing bilateral relationship between Mogadishu and Seoul.
