Sudan rejects the regional bloc’s mediation efforts

Sudan’s government has announced that it will withdraw from peace talks mediated by Igad, an East African regional agency.

It had been attempting to persuade the army and the opposing paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to negotiate an end to the nine-month civil war.

The foreign ministry claimed it had stopped relations with Igad after the regional organization included Sudan on the agenda of a conference and asked RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to attend.

He has recently visited numerous African countries in an attempt to rally political support.

Since the battle began in April, almost 7.5 million people have been forced to evacuate their homes.
