Diverging from traditional international aid frameworks, the Somali President hails Türkiye’s support as a transformative model centered on sustainable self-reliance, institutional capacity, and long-term national independence. Speaking at the inaugural Somalia Maritime Conference in Mogadishu, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud praised Ankara’s strategic approach to bilateral cooperation, emphasizing that Turkish investments focus on equipping Somali institutions to manage their own security and natural resources rather than relying on short-term humanitarian assistance. The conference, organized by the Somali Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport, brought together international diplomats, maritime experts, and policy advisors to discuss coastal defense and the blue economy.
Reflecting on the decade-long strategic framework between both nations, President Mohamud emphasized that Ankara stood by Mogadishu during severe security and economic challenges. The partnership spans vital sectors including defense infrastructure, maritime surveillance, energy exploration, and economic development. Turkish defense assistance remains instrumental in training elite national army units at Camp TurkSom, while joint initiatives in the maritime domain aim to secure territorial waters against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Furthermore, ongoing offshore seismic research conducted by Turkish exploration vessels highlights the growing technical cooperation aimed at unlocking national energy reserves.
Government officials and economic analysts emphasize that the transition toward technical training and resource management offers a sustainable path toward economic recovery. By developing modern port infrastructure, establishing joint fisheries management bodies, and modernizing state broadcasting networks, bilateral initiatives continue to generate local employment and strengthen institutional governance. Somali leadership reiterated that Ankara’s technical expertise provides the foundation necessary for the state to protect its maritime jurisdiction, attract foreign direct investment, and secure long-term fiscal stability.
As Mogadishu expands its international economic and security partnerships, federal authorities regard the bilateral relationship with Ankara as a primary cornerstone of national reconstruction. President Mohamud reaffirmed that building indigenous capacity remains essential for safeguarding sovereignty and achieving long-term self-sufficiency. By prioritizing technology transfer, professional training, and joint infrastructure projects, both governments aim to foster a resilient economic framework capable of sustaining future generations.
