France’s ambassador and diplomatic staff in Niger’s capital will be evacuated to France over the next few hours, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron also stated that French troops will leave Niamey, the capital of Niger, in the following weeks and months.
“The French military presence will end by the end of the year,” he continued.
On July 26, Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, a former commander of the presidential guard, launched a military operation that deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
Niger’s military authority ordered the deportation of French Ambassador Sylvain Itte at the end of August, but Paris refused.
