The speakers of the Somali Parliament’s two chambers chose 10 legislators to represent Somalia in two regional parliamentary organisations, the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union of IGAD Member States, on Sunday.

Four of the five PUIC delegates are members of the Lower House of Parliament, while the fifth represents the Upper House of Parliament. The Inter-Parliamentary Union of IGAD Member States will be represented by five members, four of them are People’s Assembly MPs and the fifth Upper House member.

The 10 Somali legislators were appointed when the terms of the MPs who previously represented Somalia in the two regional organisation expired.

The new delegates will endeavour to further Somalia’s interests while also encouraging regional integration and cooperation.
The PUIC is a regional parliamentary organisation that brings together Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member nations in order to foster cooperation and solidarity among Muslim countries. The Inter-Parliamentary Union of IGAD Member States is a regional parliamentary organisation that seeks to strengthen the function of parliaments in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) area while also promoting peace, security, and development.

Membership in these regional legislative organisations is critical to advancing Somalia’s interests and ensuring its voice is heard on the regional arena.

The selection of the 10 members indicates the Somali Parliament’s dedication to promote regional integration and collaboration, as well as contributing to the region’s growth and prosperity.

The Somali legislators appointed to the PUIC and the Inter-Parliamentary Union of IGAD Member States will be able to participate in different parliamentary discussions and debates, as well as conferences, seminars, and other activities connected to the organisations’ activity. Their involvement will aid in the strengthening of Somalia’s connections with other member nations as well as the promotion of regional cooperation and integration.
