The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was renamed the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia after the Security Council unanimously approved a resolution on Thursday.

The Council ratified a previous agreement reached with the African Union, which emphasized the importance of continuing to fight al-Shabaab.

The United Arab Emirates, which currently holds the UNSC presidency, announced the resolution.

“The @UN Security Council has adopted a resolution endorsing the @ AfricanUnion Peace & Security Council’s decision to reconfigure @AMISOM after months of constructive dialogue. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is now in charge “According to the UNSC.

“This resolution reflects a broad consensus on the need for a reconfigured African Union mission in Somalia focused on enabling and supporting the Somali security transition, as a result of extensive and constructive discussions between the Government of Somalia, the UN, the AU, and the EU.”

The Council expressed the hope that the Somali government would gradually take on more security responsibilities in the future.

The new mission’s goal is to enable Somali forces to assume primary security responsibility.

“However, we must acknowledge that Somalia continues to face numerous security challenges, the most serious of which is the terrorist group Al Shabab’s ongoing attacks. These attacks not only endanger Somalia’s security, but also pose a transnational threat to the region as a whole “According to the Security Council.
