Traditional elders from Somalia’s Abgaal and Hawaadle clans have demanded an immediate end to violent clashes that have erupted in the Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions. The recent fighting, triggered by disputes over grazing land, has left more than a dozen people dead in the Jalalqsi and El-Baraf areas.
Elders Condemn Violence
Speaking at a gathering in Mogadishu on Friday, senior elder Ugaas Mohamud Ali Ugas condemned the ongoing bloodshed. “Sending young men to war and then calling for peace later is not the answer. We must come together now to end this senseless fighting,” he emphasized.
Government Appeals for Mediation
Hirshabelle’s Minister of Interior, Abdi Dahir Guure Karoore, urged intellectuals and community leaders to engage in mediation efforts to halt the violence. “We deeply regret the bloodshed caused by these recurring clashes. Everyone must contribute to stopping the violence and supporting peace,” he said.
Ongoing Mediation Efforts
Despite the appeals, no formal peace agreement has been reached yet. Efforts to mediate between the warring clans are continuing as local leaders seek a resolution to prevent further violence.
