Morocco’s ambassador to Sweden was summoned late Wednesday after a man tore up and burnt a Quran outside Stockholm’s major mosque, according to the country’s national news agency.
Morocco’s Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden’s senior envoy in Rabat and expressed the kingdom’s criticism of the occurrence as well as its rejection of the “unacceptable” deed.
Earlier Wednesday, a man identified as Salwan Momika burnt a copy of the Muslim holy book in front of the Stockholm Mosque while police stood guard.
The event occurred on the first day of the Muslim festival Eid al-Adha.
A Swedish appeals court upheld a lower court’s decision to lift a prohibition on Quran burning on June 12, declaring that police had no legal grounds to halt two Quran burning rallies earlier this year.
