Somali Magazine -According to official media, the Somali military conducted “intense” operations against Al-Shabaab insurgents in the Janale region of Lower Shabelle on Saturday.
The 14th Brigade’s 83rd and 84th regiments targeted Al-Shabaab strongholds in the river villages of Abaney, Beeraha Bay, Sigale, Malablay, and Buulo Aruundi.
According to the operation’s leader, Ali Mahdi Beerdiide, his troops destroyed boats used to transfer extremists across the Shabelle river. He also asserted that they were successful in removing IEDs set by an insurgency organisation tied to Al Qaeda.
The operation comes only days after Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared “total war” on the Al Shabaab terrorist organisation.
The SNA and local militia in Hiiraan captured a village in Central Hiiraan earlier this month, which functioned as one of the group’s major operating bases.
Al-Shabaab has conducted a violent insurgency against Somalia’s internationally supported shaky central government for more than a decade.
