After slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars last weekend, Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday.
In a statement, Smith said, “I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct.” “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” she said.
Smith’s resignation comes nearly a week after slapping Chris Rock across the face onstage at the Oscars because he was offended by a joke made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) mouth,” Smith said after the slap.
“Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home are among those I have hurt,” Smith said.
“I betrayed the Academy’s trust.” I took away the opportunity for other nominees and winners to celebrate and be recognized for their outstanding work. I’m devastated. I want to refocus attention on those who deserve it for their accomplishments, allowing the Academy to return to its incredible work supporting creativity and artistry in film.”
Smith could have faced suspension or expulsion if the Academy’s board of governors had convened an emergency meeting this week to begin a formal review process.
Despite Smith’s resignation, the Academy may choose to revoke his Oscar for best actor, which he won for his role in King Richard III.
However, this is highly unlikely and has never happened in the case of a code of conduct violation.
As part of its review process, the Academy’s board will meet again on April 15 to determine additional consequences.
“I will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” Smith said at the end of his statement.
