After anti-government protests began on March 30, the Peruvian Congress demanded President Pedro Castillo to resign on Saturday.

Castillo was advised to resign in a vote taken in the Congress of the Republic on the motion of the right parties.

The proposal was approved by a vote of 61 to 43, with one abstention.

The symbolic value of the non-binding motion is regarded politically significant.

-Protests that are still going on

Because of the rise in fuel and food prices, protesters have requested Castillo to resign.

Demonstrators battled with police and shut down major roadways in towns around the country, particularly in Lima, the country’s capital, and Callao, its neighbor.

The number of individuals dead has risen to six, while the number of those injured has risen to twenty.

The skirmishes resulted in the injuries of 25 police personnel, according to the Interior Ministry.
Meanwhile, Castillo stated on Tuesday that curfew he had imposed in Lima and Callao just hours before had been lifted in order to quell protests.
Demonstrations began calmly and peacefully, but quickly escalated into acts of anti-government violence that spread across the country.
