The federal and state governments have issued a joint statement addressing the developments, particularly the humanitarian situation in the country.
The Minister of Relief and Disaster Management of the Federal Government of Somalia and the regional administrations discussed the current situation of drought, floods and other humanitarian crises in the country.
Ministers at the federal and state levels also focused on assisting those affected by the current drought in Somalia.
Key points of the statements as follow:
1. DROUGHT SITUATIONS AND LACK OF WATER IN THE COUNTRY.
As we know, many parts of the country have been affected by widespread water shortages which have resulted in livestock dying of starvation and thirst.
Areas most affected by water scarcity and drought include: – Juba, Gedo, Mudug and Galgadud.
2.Food shortages
Nearly 7.7 million people are facing severe food shortages as a result of drought, floods and locusts.
The situation is further complicated by the spread of COVID-19 infection as the recent wave of economic impact has led to a decline
in essential livelihoods.
3. Floods
Hirshabelle areas, especially villages near Beledweyne and Jowhar have been severely affected by last year’s floods which have displaced many farmers who did not cultivate their crops during the last rainy season. This has caused a humanitarian disaster
4. MALNUTRITION
Many women, children and the elderly are suffering from acute malnutrition as a result of the devastating effects of climate change.
Declining production, rising food prices and water shortages continue to exacerbate the famine.
In recent years Somalia has been facing deteriorating security political and humanitarian situations all combined are a causing concern amongst the international community.
