According to a recent Quinnipiac University national survey, more over 60% of Americans believe federal charges against former President Donald Trump are ”politically motivated.”
The criminal accusations surrounding Trump’s handling of secret government materials after leaving the White House were deemed ”extremely serious” by 65% of Americans.
Some 51% believe the former president should be punished, while 62% believe the Justice Department’s case is ”motivated” by politics.
Six in ten Americans believe Trump acted ”inappropriately” in handling secret material.
“From the gravity of the indictment to the potential national risk posed by the release of classified documents, Americans believe Trump falls short and want to hear more from him,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy.
Trump is facing 37 charges in connection with his alleged retention of sensitive government materials.
His trial is set to begin on August 14, but Trump’s attorneys are anticipated to request a postponement.
Trump has pled not guilty to the allegations.
Twice-indicted Trump is the first former president of the United States to face criminal charges. He is also facing state charges in connection with his business transactions in New York.
