Following a national team match against Israel, two German football players were subjected to racial abuse on social media.

Youssoufa Moukoko, 18, and Jessic Ngankam, 22, both missed penalty attempts in Thursday’s EURO Under-21 Championship opening against Israel in Kutaisi, Georgia.

Following the 1-1 tie, both players were subjected to racist and discriminatory comments on social media.

Moukoko commented on the racist posts, saying, “If we win, we’re all Germans.” If we lose, the’monkey’ insults begin. Jessic and I both got them. Such things simply do not belong in football.”

“Our national players show the best side of our modern and diverse Germany; these racist comments show the ugliest side,” German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wrote on Twitter.Racist remarks directed at Youssoufa Moukoko and Jessic Ngankam are inhumane and revolting.”

The racist statements were also criticised by German football’s regulatory body.

“After today’s U21 EURO game against Israel, racist, insulting, and discriminatory remarks were made about some of our players.” “We strongly condemn these remarks,” the DFB said in a tweet.

Moukoko has been a forward for Borussia Dortmund since 2020, while Ngankam plays for Hertha Berlin.
