On Sunday, Morocco defender Nouhaila Benzina made history by becoming the first football player to wear a hijab in a FIFA Women’s World Cup match.
Benzina, the Atlas Lionesses’ lone hijabi athlete in the Women’s World Cup, wore a white hijab while playing against South Korea in a Group H match in Australia’s Adelaide.
Moroccan attacker Ibtissam Jraidi scored the game-winning goal early in the game.
Morocco made their debut in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which Australia and New Zealand will co-host.
Benzina was an unused replacement in Morocco’s first match of the tournament, which Germany won 6-0 on July 24 in Melbourne.
FIFA, the international football’s governing body, authorised Muslim players to wear hijab during matches at a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in 2014.
