Peacekeepers from Zambia deployed under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) marked Zambia’s 60th Independence Day with a colorful ceremony in Mogadishu. The event, held on October 24, brought together senior officials from ATMIS and the Zambian community in Somalia to honor Zambia’s significant contributions to African peace and security.

Celebrating “Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future”

This year’s Independence Day theme, “Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future,” was celebrated by ATMIS officials, Zambian military, police, and civilians serving in Somalia. The Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC) for Somalia, Sivuyile Thandikhaya Bam, praised Zambia’s leadership and its impactful role in fostering unity across the continent.

“I commend the Government and people of Zambia for their achievements in sustaining peace as a nation and fostering solidarity among African countries on their journey towards socio-economic independence,” said Bam. He highlighted Zambia’s steadfast commitment to Somalia’s peace efforts through ATMIS, where Zambian personnel serve as police trainers, mentors, and security support staff.

The Role of Zambia in Africa’s Liberation and Independence

ATMIS Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, emphasized Zambia’s pivotal role in supporting the independence movements of countries such as Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. “Zambia’s Independence Day resonates deeply with Africans, as the nation provided sanctuary, financial support, and moral encouragement to many freedom fighters across the continent,” Kavuma remarked.

The event also saw remarks from Col. Lutangu Sitali, ATMIS’s Chief CIMIC Officer and head of the Zambian community in Somalia. Col. Sitali reflected on Zambia’s independence struggle and the courage of those who fought for freedom, saying, “We remember the brave men and women who sacrificed for Zambia’s independence, granting freedom to this generation and those to come.”

Zambia’s Dedication to Peacekeeping in Somalia

Zambian Individual Police Officers (IPOs) are integral to training and advising the Somali Police Force (SPF), while Zambian military staff provide logistical and operational support in ATMIS’s Area of Responsibility. The Zambian team’s commitment has been visible through years of dedicated service, contributing to stability in Somalia and the broader region.

The event was attended by dignitaries from the United Nations, ATMIS, international partners, and the Zambian community in Somalia, marking a momentous occasion that reaffirmed Zambia’s dedication to African peace and progress.
