The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has recognized the exceptional contributions of Ugandan troops serving in Somalia, acknowledging their critical role in bolstering peace and stability. Troops from Battle Group XXXIX (39) were awarded certificates and medals during a ceremony in Mogadishu, led by ATMIS Force Commander Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma.
Recognizing Commitment and Bravery
Lt. Gen. Kavuma praised the soldiers for their unwavering dedication, noting that their efforts have significantly advanced the ATMIS mandate. “Their commitment and bravery have brought pride to both ATMIS and Uganda,” he stated. The troops, led by Col. Benard Kashemeza, were instrumental in degrading Al-Shabaab’s influence, securing key supply routes, and supporting Somali Security Forces (SSF) in various operational areas.
The 13-month deployment saw the battlegroup actively engage in offensive operations, secure population centers, and defend critical infrastructure.
Deployment Highlights
Since November 2023, Battle Group 39 has operated in regions including Banadir and Lower Shabelle, covering key Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) such as Arbiska, Baledogle, and Al-Jazeera. Their efforts also extended to Ceel-Jaale, a strategic location for advancing ATMIS objectives.
Outgoing Contingent Commander Brig. Gen. Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi highlighted their resilience, stating, “The battlegroup remained steadfast even when facing Al-Shabaab attacks. Their operations have been crucial in denying Al-Shabaab freedom of movement.”
Incoming Troops Take Over
Battle Group XXXXII (42), led by Col. Cosea Kutesa, will now take over operations. Incoming Contingent Commander Brig. Gen. Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga emphasized the need to maintain the momentum set by their predecessors.
Beyond Combat Operations
In addition to military achievements, Ugandan troops facilitated peace through reconciliation talks in Lower Shabelle, addressing clan conflicts and fostering unity among local communities. This holistic approach has been pivotal in enhancing regional stability.
A Longstanding Commitment
Ugandan forces have been part of the African Union mission in Somalia since 2007, collaborating with troops from Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. Together, they have worked to weaken Al-Shabaab and promote lasting peace in Somalia.
Looking Ahead
The ceremony underscored the importance of continued collaboration between ATMIS, Somali forces, and regional stakeholders to ensure sustainable peace. The achievements of Battle Group 39 serve as a testament to the power of resilience and cooperation in overcoming security challenges.
