Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in Baghdad to participate in the 34th Arab League Summit, where leaders from across the Arab world are set to discuss pressing regional challenges, with a strong focus on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and broader regional cooperation. The summit, scheduled to begin on May 17, 2025, is expected to address security, economic integration, and diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
The meeting, held under the theme “Dialogue, Solidarity, and Development,” reflects a shared commitment among Arab states to confront security threats and humanitarian emergencies. The ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, which has claimed nearly 53,000 lives since October 2023, remains a top priority, with leaders expected to push for stronger diplomatic action and humanitarian relief efforts.
Iraqi government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi confirmed that Arab foreign ministers had finalized the summit’s agenda, prioritizing the Palestinian cause, strengthening Arab national security, and enhancing joint economic and climate resilience strategies. The agenda includes eight main items covering joint Arab efforts, with the Palestinian issue, Arab national security, and counterterrorism leading the priorities.
Somalia’s participation in the summit underscores its growing diplomatic engagement within the Arab League. President Mohamud is expected to hold bilateral talks with Iraqi officials and other Arab leaders on the sidelines of the summit, focusing on security cooperation, trade partnerships, and Somalia’s role in regional stability. An advance delegation led by Somalia’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Abdisalan Abdi Ali has already arrived in Baghdad to prepare for the visit.

The summit comes at a critical time for Somalia, as the country continues to navigate security challenges, economic reforms, and diplomatic realignments. Somalia has been actively strengthening ties with Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to bolster investment and security collaboration. The Arab League summit provides an opportunity for Somalia to reinforce its position within the regional bloc and advocate for stronger partnerships.
Beyond the Gaza crisis, discussions will also cover broader Arab affairs, including the situation in Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Leaders are expected to address regional security concerns, economic cooperation, and climate change policies that impact Arab nations. The summit will also determine the venue for the 35th Arab League Summit and discuss Arab nominations for international institutional roles.
As Somalia deepens its diplomatic engagement, President Mohamud’s participation in the Baghdad summit signals a commitment to regional cooperation and solidarity. The outcomes of the summit will be closely watched, particularly regarding the Arab League’s stance on Gaza and its broader strategy for addressing security and economic challenges in the region.
