The Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has held a high-level meeting with a delegation from the European External Action Service (EEAS) at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with the European Union across key sectors including security, governance, development, and humanitarian assistance.

The visiting delegation, led by EEAS Director for Africa Jonas Jonsson and accompanied by EU Ambassador to Somalia Karin Johansson, engaged in wide-ranging discussions with President Mohamud on how to enhance the EU-Somalia partnership in line with the country’s national priorities. The talks come at a critical time as Somalia continues to implement sweeping reforms aimed at stabilizing the nation and preparing for the 2026 elections.

President Mohamud expressed deep appreciation for the EU’s longstanding support, describing the bloc as one of Somalia’s most reliable international partners. “The European Union has long stood with Somalia through difficult times, and we are grateful for its unwavering support in our journey toward lasting peace and prosperity,” he said during the meeting.

The EU has played a pivotal role in Somalia’s state-building efforts, contributing to security sector reform, institutional development, and humanitarian relief. Through its various missions and funding programs, the EU has supported the Somali National Army, backed electoral and constitutional reforms, and invested in education, health, and infrastructure projects across the country.

Discussions during the meeting also touched on future areas of collaboration, including climate resilience, youth empowerment, economic recovery, and regional security. With Somalia facing the dual challenges of rebuilding after decades of conflict and adapting to climate shocks, both parties emphasized the importance of sustainable development and inclusive governance.

The meeting underscored the EU’s continued commitment to Somalia’s transition from international peacekeeping to Somali-led security. As the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) gradually hands over responsibilities to national forces, the EU has pledged to support capacity-building and logistical assistance to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

President Mohamud reiterated his administration’s focus on strengthening democratic institutions, finalizing the constitutional review process, and implementing a one-person, one-vote electoral system. He emphasized that international partnerships like the one with the EU are vital to achieving these goals and ensuring long-term stability.

The EEAS delegation praised Somalia’s reform agenda and reaffirmed the EU’s readiness to align its support with the country’s development blueprint. Ambassador Karin Johansson noted that the EU remains committed to working with Somali institutions and civil society to promote peace, human rights, and economic opportunity.

This latest engagement reflects the growing momentum behind Somalia’s diplomatic outreach and its efforts to position itself as a stable and forward-looking partner in the Horn of Africa. With the EU reaffirming its strategic interest in Somalia’s progress, the meeting is expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation and new joint initiatives in the months ahead.

As Somalia continues its path toward recovery and reform, the partnership with the European Union stands as a cornerstone of its international engagement—one that blends security, development, and diplomacy in pursuit of a more resilient and prosperous future.
