The Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Lieutenant General Odawaa Yusuf Raage, is currently in Italy on an official working visit aimed at strengthening military relations between the two countries.
During the visit, General Odawaa met with top Italian military leaders, including the Commander of the Italian Army, General Luciano Portolano. The Somali delegation received a formal welcome from the Italian military, reflecting the growing partnership and mutual respect between the two armed forces.
The discussions between the two generals focused on expanding areas of military cooperation. Key topics included increasing training opportunities for Somali troops, improving logistical support, and working together on efforts to tackle security challenges in the region.
Italy has been a long-time partner of Somalia, supporting its military development and contributing to its overall security. This visit builds on that partnership, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to work closely together to strengthen Somalia’s national defense capabilities.
General Odawaa and his Italian counterparts discussed ways to support ongoing operations against terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab. As Somalia continues to prepare for major offensives in the Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions, enhancing international military cooperation is seen as crucial to the success of those efforts.
This visit comes at a critical time, as Somalia faces ongoing threats from militant groups. The country is in the midst of major security operations aimed at regaining control over areas still under the influence of Al-Shabaab. Italy’s support, particularly in training and logistical areas, is expected to play a vital role in boosting the capacity of the Somali National Army during this period.
In addition to security-focused discussions, the visit also highlighted the broader relationship between the two nations. Italy’s role in Somalia’s development and peacebuilding efforts over the years was acknowledged, with both sides expressing interest in continuing their collaboration not only in military areas but also in promoting long-term stability.
While an official statement from the Somali National Army is expected soon, the outcomes of the visit already signal a positive step forward. Strengthened ties with Italy will help Somalia build a more professional, capable, and well-equipped military force.
As General Odawaa continues his engagements in Italy, more details are likely to emerge on specific plans and agreements made during the visit. However, the message is clear: Somalia is seeking stronger international partnerships to support its national security goals, and Italy remains a key ally in that journey.
