In a thrilling display of grit and determination, Mogadishu City Club (MCC) secured the 2026 General Daud Cup title this past Monday, pulling off a stunning 3–2 comeback against Horseed FC. The final was a classic game of two halves that kept supporters in suspense until the very last second. While the match initially looked like it would be a runaway victory for Horseed FC, MCC refused to back down, eventually overturning a significant deficit to claim the prestigious trophy.
The game began with Horseed FC, a powerhouse team owned by the Somali National Army, asserting total dominance. They caught the MCC defense off guard with a lightning-fast start, finding the back of the net twice in the opening minutes. With a 2–0 lead so early in the match, Horseed appeared to be in complete control, and many spectators likely thought the result was a foregone conclusion. However, the momentum shifted dramatically as MCC began to find their rhythm.
Rather than panicking under the pressure of the two-goal gap, Mogadishu City Club showed remarkable composure. They restructured their play, utilizing sharp attacking flair to break down the Horseed defense. The star of the afternoon was undoubtedly striker Abdikadir Enow, affectionately known by fans as “Benteke.” Enow was the engine behind the comeback, scoring two of MCC’s three unanswered goals. His clinical finishing and leadership on the pitch throughout the competition did not go unnoticed, as he was officially named Player of the Tournament.
This victory is particularly sweet for MCC, serving as a moment of redemption after a disappointing 2024–2025 season where they failed to capture the cup. That previous title went to Dekedda FC, but MCC’s performance on Monday proved they are back at the top of their game. For the fans, seeing their team claw back from the brink of defeat to lift the silverware was a testament to the club’s spirit and conditioning.
The General Daud Cup holds a special place in the heart of Somali sports. Established in 1972, it is the country’s third most prestigious football tournament, trailing only the Somali Premier League and the Regional Championship. The competition honors the legacy of General Daud Cabdulle Hirsi, the man who founded the Somali National Army. Because of this connection, Horseed FC always enters the tournament with a deep sense of pride, making MCC’s victory over them even more significant.
The tournament brings together a diverse group of 16 teams from the A, B, and C divisions of the Somali league system, offering a platform for various clubs to showcase their talent on a national stage. While Horseed FC remains one of the most prominent and consistent participants in the cup’s history, this year belonged to Mogadishu City Club. By turning a near-certain defeat into a historic win, MCC has written a new chapter in the storied history of this competition, proving that in football, a game is never truly over until the final whistle blows.
