A Kenyan senator has been detained in connection with a scholarship scam.
Jackson Mandago and three others have been charged with 11 counts of stealing and abuse of office.
He is accused of being a part of a ring that reportedly planned to steal 1.1 billion Kenyan shillings ($7.6 million; £5.9 million) designed to support further study for Kenyan students in Finland and Canada.
According to local media accounts, dozens of students who had paid to study abroad were trapped in Kenya as a result.
Those who had already enrolled in universities faced homelessness, expulsion, and deportation once the county government ceased paying their housing and tuition.
The alleged offences occurred when Mr Mandago was governor.
According to Kenya’s Star newspaper, Mr Mandago has previously denied misappropriating the funds.
According to another account, he and the current county governor of Uasin Gishu promised to guarantee that the victims received reimbursements.
President William Ruto has also weighed in, urging whomever is to blame for the scam to refund the money for the Finland and Canada Overseas Education Programme as soon as possible or face “trouble.”
He stated that after the investigations were completed, he would award local scholarships to people who had been affected.
