The Ethiopian Federal Police Command (FPC) has given details of a security operation in the country in connection with the state of emergency imposed by the government.

Addis Ababa Deputy Police Chief Melaku Fenta and Addis Ababa Police Chief Getu Argaw announced at a joint press conference that the government had arrested a number of Somalis working for the TPLF amid heavy fighting in northern Ethiopia.

Melaku Fenta and Getu Argaw indicated that the operation was carried out in accordance with the emergency rule.

The commanders did not disclose the names of the captured Somali men and their whereabouts, except for allegations that they were collaborating with the TPLF.

The commanders added that the operation against the TPLF would continue, accusing the rebels of being involved in organizing terrorism.

The statement comes as fighting between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF, now near Addis Ababa, has intensified in recent months.

The fighting in northern Ethiopia has had a devastating effect on the country’s population, resulting in casualties and a humanitarian disaster.
