The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has recognized the Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit (SLFPU) for their exemplary contributions to peacekeeping and stability in Somalia. During a ceremony held at ATMIS Sector Six Headquarters in Kismayo, 160 SLFPU officers were awarded African Union medals of honor for their dedicated year-long service.

    Commendation from ATMIS Leadership

ATMIS Police Commissioner, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Hillary Sao Kanu, led the tribute, commending the contingent for their exceptional work in fulfilling the mission’s mandate.

“The diligence and professionalism of the Sierra Leone Police have earned respect from key partners, including the Somali Police Force, UN Police, UNSOS, and local authorities. Their efforts have been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability,” stated AIGP Kanu.

    Key Contributions to Somali Stability

During their deployment, the SLFPU made significant contributions, including:

Strengthening Law Enforcement: Partnering with the Somali Police Force (SPF) to uphold law and order.

VIP and Infrastructure Security: Providing escorts for high-profile individuals, safeguarding government facilities, and securing key events.

Operational Support: Assisting ATMIS Individual Police Officers (IPOs) in mentoring and training SPF personnel.

Community Impact: Promoting stability and fostering growth in Jubaland State.

SLFPU Contingent Commander, SP Samuel Abu Bakarr Kargbo, expressed gratitude to the officers, stating, “The positive impact on the Somali people, through enhancing security and supporting international operations, has been profound.”

    Acknowledgment of Achievements

The medal ceremony featured senior officials, including ATMIS Sector Commander Brigadier Seif Salim Rashid and Jubaland CID Commander Omar Hujale. Their presence underscored the importance of the SLFPU’s role in advancing peace and stability in the region.

    Looking Ahead

ATMIS continues to emphasize the importance of international collaboration in achieving its peacekeeping objectives. Recognitions like this reflect the critical role of multinational efforts in fostering sustainable development and security across Somalia.
