The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has once again affirmed the African Union’s strong support for Somalia’s sovereignty and stability. He made the remarks during a meeting with Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held on Sunday on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The discussions came at a significant moment for Somalia, following its recent election to the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026–2028 term. Youssouf congratulated Somalia for securing the seat, describing it as a well-deserved achievement. He noted that the election reflects Somalia’s growing influence and active role in shaping peace and security discussions across the continent.

During the meeting, Youssouf emphasized the African Union’s continued commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. This message comes at a time when the Somali government has been vocal in defending its territorial integrity on various international platforms. The AU’s reassurance signals strong continental backing for Somalia’s position and its efforts to safeguard national unity.

The talks also focused on the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, known as African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The mission, which took over from the previous AU operation, works closely with Somali security forces to combat the militant group al-Shabab and to stabilize areas that have been recovered from extremist control. Youssouf acknowledged that the mission is currently facing funding challenges, but stressed that efforts are ongoing to improve its operational capacity and strengthen its civilian components. Ensuring that AUSSOM remains effective is seen as critical to maintaining security gains and supporting long-term stability in the country.

In addition to security matters, Youssouf praised the Somali government for its efforts to promote inclusive political dialogue and to prepare for upcoming elections. He described these steps as essential for consolidating peace and laying the groundwork for sustainable development. Strengthening democratic processes and encouraging broader participation in governance are viewed as key pillars in Somalia’s state-building journey.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the AU’s continued engagement and expressed gratitude for what he described as consistent and principled support from the continental body. He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to working closely with the African Union to advance shared priorities, particularly in areas of peacebuilding, security cooperation, and institutional development.

The president also highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration in humanitarian assistance and resilience-building initiatives. Somalia continues to face humanitarian pressures, including the effects of climate shocks and insecurity. Strong partnerships with regional and international organizations remain vital to addressing these challenges and supporting vulnerable communities.

Overall, the meeting underscored the close relationship between Somalia and the African Union at a time of important political and security developments. Somalia’s election to the Peace and Security Council marks a milestone in its re-engagement on the continental stage, while the AU’s renewed backing reinforces confidence in the country’s efforts to strengthen governance, security, and national unity. Both leaders signaled their intention to deepen cooperation and maintain momentum toward a more stable and prosperous future for Somalia.
