The African Union commission’s head has praised the start of negotiations between the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayan forces to put an end to the violence that has wracked Ethiopia’s northern Tigray province.
In the South African-based talks, Moussa Faki stated that he was “encouraged by the early demonstration of a commitment to peace.”
Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, and Uhuru Kenyatta, the former vice president of Kenya, are the mediators nominated by the AU, along with Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the former vice president of South Africa.
According to Mr. Faki, the US, UN, and regional organization Igad for East Africa all had observer status at the negotiations.
