In a strategic move to strengthen ties with Somalia’s largest charity, the British non-governmental organization Somali Relief and Development Forum (SRDF) has officially rebranded as Zamzam Foundation UK. The rebranding follows a partnership agreement with the Zamzam Foundation, a Somalia-based humanitarian organization, aimed at expanding aid and development programs across the Horn of Africa.
Strengthening the Partnership
The rebranding reflects a growing collaboration between the two organizations, which began with a partnership agreement signed last year. Zamzam Foundation UK will continue as a separate legal entity but will operate under the new name to enhance its fundraising efforts and support for Somalia.
According to SRDF trustees, the name change is intended to create a unified identity, making it easier for British Muslims and the Somali diaspora to contribute to charitable initiatives in Somalia. These efforts include supporting orphans, schools, emergency aid delivery, and grants for sustainable development projects.
A History of Impact
The Zamzam Foundation, established in 1992, has been a cornerstone of humanitarian aid in Somalia. From providing emergency relief in remote areas to partnering with global organizations like Save the Children and Oxfam, it has played a vital role in addressing the country’s most pressing needs.
Speaking about the partnership, Hany El-Banna, co-founder of SRDF and Islamic Relief, praised the move as an “innovative and inspiring partnership.” He highlighted that SRDF’s status as a UK-registered charity provides a strong platform for the Zamzam Foundation to connect with the Somali diaspora and raise funds for impactful projects.
Expanding Outreach and Collaboration
The rebranded charity has launched a new website and social media channels to increase visibility and engagement. These platforms will share updates on ongoing aid programs and accept donations from the UK public, ensuring greater transparency and accessibility for donors.
Omar Jama, Executive Director of the Zamzam Foundation, emphasized the importance of the collaboration. Reflecting on the charity’s origins during Somalia’s tumultuous period in 1992, Jama noted how the organization has grown into a “beacon of hope” for Somalis. He expressed pride in the UK partnership, which he believes will amplify their mission to deliver transformational aid and development projects.
A Boost for UK-Somalia Relations
The partnership also signals a significant step in fostering stronger ties between the UK and Somalia. By creating a unified front, Zamzam Foundation UK aims to serve as a bridge for resources, expertise, and solidarity between the two countries. The collaboration enhances Somalia’s capacity to tackle challenges like poverty, education, and healthcare more effectively.
A Broader Vision
In addition to immediate aid, the partnership aspires to create long-term change by focusing on education and community development. By investing in schools and grants, Zamzam Foundation UK hopes to empower Somali communities to build a sustainable future.
The rebranding aligns with a broader vision of international cooperation, with organizations across borders joining forces to address global challenges. It also highlights the importance of engaging diasporas in supporting their home countries through targeted and effective initiatives.
