Education for the Visually Impaired in Somalia: Living with Disabilities in Somalia

People with special needs in Somalia have not received the attention and concentration that they deserve. Their demands are still not taken into account when planning infrastructure developments such as roads, new buildings, and public transportation. Furthermore, the law has yet to take action to ensure that all standards for people with disabilities are met. Despite the fact that President Mohamed Abdullahi ‘Farmaajo’ signed the National Disability Act in December 2018, the needs of disabled persons are not taken into account. As a result, they have encountered tremendous obstacles that have complicated their lives.

According to studies, people with disabilities account for 5% of Somalia’s overall population. The blind are among Somalia’s special needs population. The educational institutions that rarely cater to this seriously underprivileged demographic are the greatest challenge they face. They have horrific stories to tell about their everyday battles to get a good education. Because the government is failing to fulfill its obligations under the National Disability Act, society will be unable to meet the demands of people with visual impairment. The majority of schools, colleges, and institutions across the country are unable to meet the needs of persons with visual impairments.
