NAIROBI, KENYA – February 23, 2025 – Climate experts from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have issued a warning about an impending heat wave expected to affect Kenya and the larger Eastern African region. The forecast, released on February 21, 2025, indicates that above-average temperatures will impact several areas, including Eastern Kenya, South Sudan, Eastern Tanzania, Southern Sudan, and Southern Somalia.
Health and Agricultural Impact
The elevated temperatures are expected to pose significant risks to both human health and agriculture. Residents in the affected regions are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate the effects of the heat wave, such as staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.

Regional Forecast
The IGAD Climate Predictions and Application Centre (ICPAC) predicts that southeastern Sudan will experience temperatures exceeding 32°C, while the greater Horn of Africa, including parts of Kenya, will see temperatures ranging from 20-32°C. Cooler conditions are expected in Northern Sudan, the Ethiopian highlands, and Central and Western Kenya.
Advisory from Kenya Meteorological Department
The Kenya Meteorological Department has also issued an advisory, predicting sunny, dry, and hot weather conditions over most parts of the country in the coming week. Maximum temperatures of more than 30°C are expected, except in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley.
