ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – February 20, 2025 – The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) has announced that it has finalized preparations to conduct a nationwide polio vaccination campaign across 10 states. The campaign is scheduled to take place from February 21 to 24, 2025.
Campaign Details
The EPHI has mobilized approximately 85,000 healthcare professionals to carry out the four-day vaccination campaign. The initiative aims to immunize over 13.8 million children under the age of five. The EPHI has urged parents to vaccinate their children, regardless of whether they have been previously vaccinated against the virus.

Background
Since the last case of wild poliovirus was detected in January 2014, Ethiopia has experienced periodic outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses. In response, the Ethiopian government partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) to vaccinate over 5.6 million children with a novel oral polio vaccine last November.
WHO’s Support
The WHO has praised Ethiopia’s efforts in eradicating polio and has supported the upcoming vaccination campaign. The organization emphasized the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage to prevent the spread of the virus.
