European Union Ambassador to Somalia Francesca Di Mauro hosted an Iftar dinner on Monday evening at the EU diplomatic compound in Mogadishu, using the gathering as a platform to encourage unity and dialogue at a time of political tension in the country.

The event brought together senior officials from the Federal Government of Somalia, political leaders, diplomats, civil society representatives and members of the media. The atmosphere was warm and respectful, reflecting the spirit of Ramadan, but the message shared during the evening focused strongly on the need for national cooperation.

In her remarks, Ambassador Di Mauro stressed the importance of reconciliation, compromise and open communication among Somali leaders. She urged all political stakeholders to put aside their differences and focus on a shared national agenda that places the interests of the Somali people first. According to her, the country’s future depends on leaders choosing dialogue over division.

She acknowledged that Somalia continues to face serious political and security challenges. Disagreements over the electoral process, security arrangements and constitutional amendments have created tension between the Federal Government and opposition groups, including the Somali Future Council. Formal talks between the sides have stalled in recent weeks, raising concerns about the direction of the political process.

Despite these challenges, Di Mauro praised the resilience of the Somali people. She noted that Somalia has, time and again, managed to navigate difficult transitions through dialogue and negotiation. She expressed confidence that the country can once again find a path forward if leaders show flexibility and a willingness to compromise for the greater good.

“The future of Somalia rests on dialogue, mutual respect and a willingness to compromise,” she said, reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to supporting Somali-led and nationally owned political processes. She made it clear that sustainable progress can only be achieved when solutions are developed and agreed upon by Somalis themselves.

A government minister who attended the event said the ambassador has been actively involved in encouraging dialogue between the Federal Government and the Somali Future Council. Her efforts have focused particularly on key issues such as the electoral framework, security coordination and the ongoing constitutional review process. These matters are seen as critical to ensuring stability and strengthening democratic governance in the country.

The Iftar dinner offered an informal setting where leaders from different political camps could interact away from the pressure of official negotiations. Such gatherings can help rebuild trust and open channels of communication, especially at a time when formal discussions have slowed down. Participants were able to exchange views in a more relaxed environment, which many observers see as a positive step.

The European Union remains one of Somalia’s key international partners. Over the years, the EU has provided support in state-building efforts, security sector reform, humanitarian assistance and democratic governance. Its involvement includes backing institutions, supporting reforms and contributing to programs aimed at improving stability and development.

By hosting the Iftar, Ambassador Di Mauro sent a clear message that dialogue and national consensus are essential for Somalia’s progress. As political leaders continue to debate the country’s future direction, international partners like the European Union are urging them to work together, find common ground and move forward in the interest of peace, stability and the Somali people.
