The government of Kenya has ramped up efforts to distribute over one million bags of subsidized fertilizer to farmers in high-producing counties, particularly in the Rift Valley. This initiative aims to ease the severe shortages that have threatened to delay the planting season.

Agriculture Principal Secretary Kiprono Rono has been actively overseeing the distribution process, visiting key depots in Kitale, Moi’s Bridge, and Eldoret. At these locations, lorries carrying fertilizer have been seen lining up to make deliveries, while thousands of farmers wait to purchase the essential commodity.

Farmers across the region have expressed relief that the government has followed through on its pledge to supply affordable fertilizer. However, they have also called for more accessible distribution points in rural areas to ensure that small-scale farmers do not have to travel long distances.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya had previously raised concerns over the delays, warning that failure to distribute the fertilizer on time would directly impact maize production this year. Similarly, David Kiberenge, a representative of small-scale farmers, urged the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to improve efficiency at depots to reduce long queues.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe assured farmers that the fertilizer distribution had resumed as promised. He acknowledged reports of farmers struggling to access fertilizer despite receiving e-vouchers, attributing the issue to logistical challenges. Kagwe confirmed that one million bags were ready for issuance and reassured farmers that his ministry was working to ensure timely planting during the long rains.

To accelerate the distribution process, the government has enlisted the help of contracted suppliers through the NCPB and is utilizing train wagons to transport fertilizer from Mombasa to Naivasha. An additional 1,380 metric tons are also en route to Mombasa to supplement existing supplies.

Kagwe encouraged farmers to remain optimistic and act swiftly to redeem their e-vouchers, emphasizing that the onset of rains should not cause panic. He reiterated that supporting Kenyan farmers remains a top priority for the government.

In light of the increased demand for fertilizer, Kagwe also warned farmers about conmen taking advantage of the situation. The Anti-Counterfeit Agency is on high alert, and farmers have been advised to only purchase fertilizer from registered distributors and NCPB branches. Reports indicate that authorities have already seized over 250 bags of counterfeit fertilizer in the Rift Valley and arrested two suspects involved in the illegal trade.

The government remains committed to ensuring that all farmers have access to high-quality farm inputs to maximize crop yields and bolster food security in the country.
