(Xinhua) – MOGADISHU (Xinhua) – A senior army officer stated the Somali National Army’s (SNA) Danab special forces killed seven al-Shabab extremists and wounded others during a security operation near Wisil town in Hobyo, Mudug region, central Somalia, on Sunday.
During the raid, the SNA leader, Odowa Yusuf Rage, said the forces also detained two injured militants and recovered weapons and a vehicle.
“During a special operation in Mudug region under Galmudug State in central Somalia, our soldiers collected weaponry, namely four improvised explosive devices (IEDs), four AK 47 rifles, and a vehicle,” Rage stated.
He emphasized that the operation targeted terrorists in the area in order to minimize their threat in the region, and that similar actions against militants will continue.The operation came two weeks after Galmudug State concluded parliamentary elections in the region.
Government forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab in the southern regions, but the militants are still in control of the rural areas of those regions, conducting ambushes and planting landmines.
