Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalan Abdi Ali, is calling on the Somali diaspora to boost their support for the Somali National Army (SNA). He says their help is key to improving national security and creating a stable future for the country.
The minister made these remarks during a special event held on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Department of Diaspora and Communities. Speaking to members of the Somali diaspora and officials, he thanked Somalis living abroad for their continued support over the past three decades.
“The Somali diaspora has always been there for us—through war, disasters, and hard times,” said Minister Ali. “Since the fall of the central government in 1991, their help has been critical for Somalia’s progress, especially in areas of security and economic growth.”
He explained that support from Somalis abroad has made a big difference in rebuilding the country. Their efforts have helped provide emergency aid, rebuild infrastructure, and support families back home.
To strengthen the connection between the diaspora and the government, Minister Ali also announced a new project: the construction of a building dedicated to diaspora affairs. The facility will be completed within five months and will serve as a central hub for events, programs, and official meetings. It aims to provide a space where Somali communities abroad can work more closely with the government on important national matters.
At the same event, the minister introduced two major initiatives:
- The Somali Diaspora Investment Forum – an annual gathering that will focus on encouraging Somalis living abroad to invest in the country’s development.
- Diaspora Night – a celebration designed to recognize the efforts of the diaspora and build stronger connections between communities abroad and those in Somalia.
- According to a recent report titled “Diaspora Aid is Crucial for Emergency Relief in the Somali Regions”, Somalis living abroad send back an estimated $1.4 billion to $2 billion every year. These remittances support nearly 40% of households in Somalia. The money is often used for food, education, healthcare, and small business support.
