Security forces in Somalia’s Jubbaland State have carried out a successful operation targeting Al-Shabaab’s illegal activities in the Jammaame district, located in the Lower Juba region. The operation focused on areas along the riverbanks where the militant group was reportedly collecting illegal taxes from local farmers.
According to police officers who led the operation, the forces were able to destroy several makeshift stations that Al-Shabaab had set up to collect money and goods from farmers. These tax collection sites were being used to fund the group’s operations and intimidate civilians in the area.
In addition to dismantling the tax stations, the police also destroyed a small boat that Al-Shabaab members had been using to secretly cross the river. This boat allowed them to move from one side of the river to the other without being detected by local residents or security patrols.
“Today’s mission was part of our broader campaign to improve safety in the region,” said one Jubbaland officer who spoke to reporters. “We’re targeting the places where Al-Shabaab is trying to exploit and harm our people.”
Security officials also emphasized the strong cooperation between the police force and the local population. Residents have reportedly been sharing valuable information about Al-Shabaab’s movements and hideouts, helping the police plan effective operations. Officers said that this partnership played a key role in the success of the latest mission.
“We are very pleased with the support we are getting from the community,” the officer added. “Their trust and assistance allow us to respond quickly and deal with threats more effectively.”
The authorities urged local farmers and community members to continue working closely with security forces. They stressed that maintaining strong communication between the public and the police is essential in identifying Al-Shabaab’s activities and removing them from the area for good.
This operation is part of a wider effort by Jubbaland State to push back against Al-Shabaab’s presence in the Lower Juba region. In recent months, the government has increased its security patrols, conducted intelligence-led raids, and worked more closely with local communities to stop the group from spreading fear and violence.
Al-Shabaab has long used areas like Jammaame to finance its operations through forced taxation, extortion, and intimidation. These actions have put additional pressure on farmers who are already struggling to make a living due to insecurity and limited resources.
By destroying Al-Shabaab’s tax collection sites and cutting off their ability to cross the river, Jubbaland authorities hope to weaken the group’s influence in the region. Police say these efforts will continue until all areas under threat are cleared and made safe for civilians.
Local leaders have welcomed the operation, saying it sends a clear message that Al-Shabaab will not be allowed to operate freely in their communities. They also encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The latest developments in Jammaame show that while challenges remain, progress is being made in the fight against terrorism in Somalia. With ongoing support from residents and a determined police force, officials are optimistic that security will continue to improve across the region.
