A police officer in Jubbaland has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing journalist Abshir Khalif Shide Omar in Kismayo, according to local authorities and media representatives. The incident happened on Monday evening in the city, which serves as the interim administrative capital of Jubbaland. Reports say there was a brief argument between the officer and the journalist shortly before the shooting. The exact reason behind the confrontation is still not clear, and investigations are ongoing.

The spokesperson for the Jubbaland Police, Captain Shukri Farah Duale, confirmed that the officer suspected of carrying out the shooting has been taken into custody. She said the case will be investigated thoroughly and handled through the proper legal process. The officer is expected to face prosecution if found responsible. The swift arrest has drawn attention, as it is uncommon in Kismayo for a police officer accused of killing a journalist to be detained so quickly.

According to the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), Abshir had just left an iftar gathering with fellow journalists before the incident occurred. The group had met to edit a program they had recorded earlier, which featured politicians discussing various issues. Colleagues said Abshir had recorded a voiceover for the segment, and it was scheduled to air later that same night.

NUSOJ said its early findings confirm that Abshir had been working with other journalists before the shooting, but the full details of what happened between him and the police officer remain unclear. Investigators are expected to question witnesses and review any available evidence to determine exactly how the altercation unfolded.

Abshir had been working as a freelance journalist for the past three months. Before that, he was associated with Jubbaland TV, Wamo Radio, and Hornconnect, a privately owned media production company. Those who knew him described him as dedicated to his work and passionate about telling stories that matter to the community. His sudden death has shocked fellow journalists and members of the public.

This appears to be the first reported killing of a journalist in Somalia this year. However, the country has long been considered one of the most dangerous places for media workers. Journalists often face threats, harassment, arrests, and violence from both state security forces and armed groups. Many reporters continue their work despite these risks, driven by a commitment to inform the public.

Omar Faruk Osman, the secretary-general of NUSOJ, described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing. He said police officers are meant to protect citizens, including journalists who are simply doing their jobs. When a journalist is killed in such circumstances, he added, it raises serious concerns about safety and accountability within law enforcement agencies.

Osman called for a swift, transparent, and credible judicial process to ensure justice is served. He emphasized that holding those responsible accountable is essential not only for Abshir’s family and colleagues, but also for restoring public trust. NUSOJ has urged authorities to take meaningful steps to prevent further violence against journalists and to strengthen protections for media workers across the country.

The killing has once again highlighted the challenges facing press freedom in Somalia. Media professionals continue to operate in a difficult environment marked by political tensions, insecurity, and limited protections. While the arrest of the officer may signal a willingness to act, many journalists say lasting change will require consistent accountability and stronger safeguards.

As investigations continue, Abshir’s family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of a young journalist whose life was cut short. His death serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced by those who work to keep the public informed.
