The regional administration of Jubbaland has emphasized the need for unity in Somalia’s ongoing battle against extremist groups, calling on all political factions to put aside differences and work together to ensure long-term stability and security.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Jubbaland State House commended the efforts of federal military forces and local clan militias fighting against militants in the Middle Shabelle region. The administration warned that political divisions could provide extremist groups with opportunities to regroup, ultimately undermining national security and development efforts.
Jubbaland officials stressed that coordinated efforts are crucial to eliminating terrorist threats, highlighting that only a united front can secure a lasting victory. The statement urged the Federal Government of Somalia, its member states, and all Somali citizens to take collective responsibility in securing a peaceful and prosperous future.
The call for unity came just hours after former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo reiterated that combating Al-Shabaab and ISIS should not be seen as a political issue, but rather as a national duty. He emphasized that militant groups thrive on political instability and disunity, making it essential for all leaders and communities to work together to deny them any advantage.
The ongoing military campaign in Middle Shabelle has resulted in significant progress against extremist elements, with more than 200 Al-Shabaab militants reportedly killed in coordinated land and air operations. This offensive marks one of the largest in the region, showcasing the determination of Somali forces to dismantle militant strongholds.
Security experts have long warned that while military victories are essential, they must be reinforced by strong governance, intelligence-sharing, and sustainable development initiatives. Without addressing the root causes of extremism, including political infighting and economic hardships, Somalia risks falling into a cycle where terrorist groups regain strength after each military setback.
Jubbaland’s renewed call for national unity comes at a critical time as Somalia intensifies its counterterrorism efforts. With continued support from international partners, including U.S. airstrikes and African Union peacekeeping missions, Somalia has a strategic opportunity to weaken extremist networks. However, political cohesion remains a key factor in ensuring that gains made on the battlefield translate into lasting peace.
Regional leaders have also expressed concerns that unresolved disputes between the federal government and Somalia’s member states could hinder long-term stability. Recent clashes in parts of the country have raised fears that internal divisions could slow down counterterrorism efforts, giving extremist groups the chance to exploit vulnerabilities.
Jubbaland’s statement serves as a reminder that Somalia’s fight against terrorism requires more than just military action. Political leaders must prioritize national security over partisan conflicts and work together to create an environment where extremism cannot take root again. As operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS continue, the need for collaboration between the federal government, regional administrations, and local communities has never been greater.
The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Somalia can maintain momentum in its counterterrorism campaign. With a stronger focus on unity, governance, and intelligence coordination, the country has a chance to break the cycle of extremist resurgence and move toward a more secure and stable future.
