The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein, also known as Muungaab, has handed over medical supplies to Community Defense Forces working with the Somali National Army. These supplies are meant to support ongoing military operations against the al-Shabab militant group in the Hiiraan region.
The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday in Mogadishu. During the event, Mayor Muungaab reaffirmed his administration’s full support for both the national army and local defense forces. He praised their efforts to protect the country and highlighted the importance of working together to defeat al-Shabab.
“We fully support our brave forces who are risking their lives to protect Somalia,” said Mayor Muungaab. “This assistance is just one step. We will continue to provide whatever is needed to help them succeed in this important mission.”
The Mayor emphasized that defeating al-Shabab is critical to bringing peace and stability back to Somalia. He encouraged all levels of government and the community to stand behind the armed forces and local defense groups.
The ceremony was attended by several important figures, including members of the Federal Parliament, the Secretary-General of the Banadir Regional Administration, and representatives from the Banadir Women’s Association. Their presence showed that there is strong political and public support for the military operations.
The Community Defense Forces are groups of local volunteers and fighters who work alongside the Somali National Army. They play a key role in protecting towns and villages and in pushing back against al-Shabab fighters. These forces are especially important in rural areas, where government presence is often limited.
The recent delivery of medical supplies is expected to help treat injured soldiers and improve the overall conditions for fighters on the front lines. Medical support is essential for maintaining morale and ensuring that troops remain healthy and able to continue their duties.
Al-Shabab has been a threat in Somalia for more than 15 years. The group is linked to al-Qaida and is known for carrying out deadly attacks, including bombings and assassinations. Their main targets include civilians, government offices, and security forces.
The Somali government, along with international partners like the United Nations, the African Union, and the United States, has been working to eliminate the group. Many operations have been launched in recent years to drive al-Shabab out of towns and villages across the country.
Despite progress in some areas, al-Shabab still controls parts of central and southern Somalia. The group uses these areas to plan attacks and recruit fighters. Because of this, continued military efforts are needed to push them out completely and allow the government to restore full control.
Mayor Muungaab’s support for the frontline forces is part of a larger effort to strengthen local and national security cooperation. His administration has been active in providing resources and coordinating with security agencies to protect Mogadishu and the surrounding areas.
In his speech, the Mayor called on citizens to support the military and not be afraid to speak out against extremism. He said that peace and stability can only return when communities, leaders, and the army work together.
The medical supplies handed over this week are a reminder that the fight against al-Shabab is not just about weapons and soldiers—it also involves caring for the people involved and helping them stay strong during difficult times.
As military operations continue in Hiiraan and other regions, the Somali people and their leaders remain hopeful that peace is within reach
