According to the secretary general of NATO, which has 30 members, Ukraine will receive more help with air defence.
Prior to the second day of the NATO defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Jens Stoltenberg and Lloyd Austin participated in a joint press conference.
At the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting on Wednesday, the ministers decided to “provide more air defence assistance to Ukraine,” according to Stoltenberg.
He reaffirmed, “We will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes,” and pledged increased assistance for the nation, which has been engaged in combat with Russian forces since February.
According to him, NATO also applauds the UN General Assembly’s resolution denouncing Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian territories and urging Moscow to reestablish the nation’s territorial integrity.
Austin, for his part, praised NATO allies who “step up to provide security assistance” even after Russia’s “unprovoked and unjust invasion of Ukraine,” which is now in its eighth month.
When it comes to the security of the region, this alliance is the crucial forum for discussion, decision-making, and action, he said.
Austin also reaffirmed that the US would uphold NATO’s Article 5 on collective defence by defending “every square inch of its territory.”
In addition to discussing future changes to the military alliance’s defence and deterrence posture in response to the conflict in Ukraine, NATO defence ministers are anticipated to evaluate the alliance’s response to the alleged nuclear threat from Russia.
Josep Borrell, the head of EU foreign policy, will also participate in their discussion on the future of NATO missions.
