The SSC-Khatumo regional state formation conference has officially concluded in Las Anod, leading to the creation of a new federal member state in Somalia. The new state, named the Northeastern Somali Regional State, will have Las Anod as its capital.
The conference brought together 417 delegates from the Sool, Sanaag, and Buuhoodle districts, who unanimously agreed to form a permanent regional administration aligned with Somalia’s federal government. This decision replaces the previous SSC-Khatumo interim administration and marks a new chapter in the region’s political future.
One of the major outcomes of the conference was the adoption of a new constitution for the regional state. The process was led by local leaders, elders, and community representatives, highlighting the strong local ownership and inclusive approach taken to reach consensus.
The Federal Government of Somalia showed its support for the new state. Somalia’s Minister of Interior and Federal Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali (Koosh), attended the closing ceremony in Las Anod. His presence signaled the federal government’s official endorsement of the newly formed administration.
In a move welcomed by many in the community, Ali Abdullahi (Gaboobe), a well-respected traditional leader, was appointed as the interim head of the new regional state. He will serve in this position until formal elections are held. His selection is seen as a step toward unity, peace, and a smooth political transition.
According to the final declaration from the conference, local communities played a key role in resolving past disputes and ensuring broad agreement on the new administration. The conference focused on creating a peaceful and inclusive system of governance that reflects the wishes of the people in the region.
The Federal Government praised the peace-building efforts of the SSC communities and promised to support the new regional leadership. In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said the federal government would assist in governance, development, and building strong institutions in the Northeastern Somali Regional State.
This development is part of Somalia’s broader federalization process, which aims to create well-functioning regional states that are connected to the central government in Mogadishu. The creation of this new state comes at a time when the country is working to strengthen local governance and promote community-based reconciliation.
The announcement of the new regional state was met with celebration among community members and political leaders from the SSC regions. Many see it as a positive step forward for unity, representation, and stability under Somalia’s federal system.
In summary, the formation of the Northeastern Somali Regional State represents a milestone in Somalia’s political journey. With support from both local communities and the federal government, the region is now looking ahead to a peaceful and inclusive future.
