A landmark game at Mogadishu Stadium brings unity, global attention, and new hope for Somalia’s sporting future

A major football event held on Tuesday at Mogadishu Stadium has brought a wave of excitement and hope to Somalia. The historic peace match united African football legends, Somali players, thousands of fans, and regional sports leaders in a celebration of unity, recovery, and a brighter future for Somali sports.

The event marked the most significant sporting gathering in Somalia since the outbreak of civil war. Among the honored guests was the President of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), Augustino Parek Maduot. Legendary football stars such as Samuel Eto’o from Cameroon, Nigeria’s Jay-Jay Okocha, and Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor played alongside current Somali Premier League players in a friendly match against a team of former national players known as the Ocean Stars.

Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, and Djibouti Football Federation President Suleiman Waberi, who is also a FIFA Council Member, were also present. Their attendance showed strong support from both national and regional leaders for Somalia’s efforts to revive its sports sector.

CECAFA President Maduot expressed his support, saying, “We must always support our members in the region. It is always good to be united as a football family.” His words reflected the broader message of the day — unity and solidarity through sport.

Though the final score was 8–4 in favor of the legends-led team, the real victory was the message the match sent: Somalia is rebuilding and ready to move forward. Fans cheered not just for goals, but for what the event represented — peace, national pride, and a return to normal life.

Prime Minister Barre called the match a major milestone in restoring Somalia’s identity through sports. “The presence of international stars and sports leaders shows that global confidence in Somalia is returning,” he said. His comments highlighted how events like these can change perceptions and inspire young people.

Beyond the celebrations, the match had practical goals. It was also used to test Somalia’s readiness to host international football games. The government and sports authorities are working to improve national stadiums and training facilities to meet global standards.

The visiting football legends are expected to remain in Mogadishu for a few days. During their stay, they will tour local sports facilities, meet with officials, and discuss ways to support the growth of football in the country. Their presence has already created a buzz among Somali youth and athletes, many of whom see these stars as role models.

This historic match is more than just a game. It’s a powerful sign that Somalia is on the path to recovery. After years of conflict and instability, the country is using sports — especially football — as a way to bring people together, promote peace, and show the world that Somalia is ready for a new chapter.

As the cheers echoed through Mogadishu Stadium, it became clear that this was not just about football. It was about hope, pride, and the power of sport to bring people together. Somalia’s journey continues, but this match was a big step forward.
