The New Mukuru Housing Estate project, set to be Kenya’s largest, brings hope and dignity to low-income families as part of the government’s affordable housing initiative

President William Ruto on Tuesday officially handed over 1,080 affordable housing units to residents of Mukuru in Nairobi. The President described this event as one of the most significant moments in his political journey, calling it a major step forward in improving the lives of ordinary Kenyans.

The homes are part of the New Mukuru Housing Estate project, which aims to deliver a total of 13,248 housing units. Once completed, this development will be the largest real estate project in Kenya’s history.

During the handover ceremony, the President commissioned the first section of the project—Lot 1, Phase 1—which includes 5,616 bedsitter units. Meanwhile, construction is ongoing for the next two phases: Lot 2 will offer 3,024 one-bedroom units, and Lot 3 will add 4,608 two-bedroom units.

Speaking during the event, President Ruto expressed his excitement and pride in the progress of the housing project. He said the new homes go beyond just providing shelter—they are creating opportunities for better lives.

“This is the most important day in my political life,” said the President. “We’ve given out not just house keys, but the keys to real homes—places where people can live with dignity.”

He stressed that the government’s affordable housing plan is focused on helping low-income families access decent living conditions. The goal is to support those at the bottom of the economic ladder by giving them a chance to live in safe, clean, and secure environments.

“In these homes, people now have access to better sanitation, improved security, and a stable place to raise their families,” President Ruto explained. “These are chances that many of them may never have had otherwise.”

The affordable housing initiative is not just about buildings—it’s also creating jobs and boosting the economy. According to the President, more than 200 similar housing projects are being developed in various parts of the country. These projects are providing employment to over 200,000 young people.

He emphasized that the Mukuru project is only the beginning of a larger national plan to provide decent housing for all Kenyans.

“We are working on over 200 projects like this one,” said Ruto. “They are all at different stages of development, and together they are employing more than 200,000 young people.”

The housing program is part of the government’s broader vision to reduce the housing gap in Kenya and to ensure that everyone, regardless of income level, has access to quality living conditions.

In addition to offering better homes, the initiative also aims to improve the overall quality of life in urban areas by creating well-planned communities with essential services such as water, electricity, and proper waste management.

The President concluded his speech by encouraging citizens to support and take advantage of the housing projects, which he said are designed to bring dignity and opportunity to ordinary Kenyans.

“This is how we build a better future—by giving every Kenyan a fair chance at a decent life,” he said.
