In a significant diplomatic move, President William Ruto of Kenya and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met at State House in Nairobi on October 23, 2024, to discuss the establishment of the new African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The leaders expressed their commitment to ensuring the success of this crucial mission as it prepares to take over from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Transitioning to AUSSOM
During their discussions, President Ruto and President Sheikh emphasized the importance of a smooth transition as AUSSOM gears up to assume its responsibilities on January 1, 2025. The leaders highlighted the need for the mission to build on the achievements of its predecessor, ATMIS, which has played a vital role in enhancing security and stability in Somalia over the past years.
Ruto and Sheikh emphasize Funding and Support
In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, both leaders stressed that AUSSOM must be adequately financed to effectively carry out its mandate. They acknowledged the necessity to explore all available funding options to support the mission’s operational requirements and ensure its long-term viability.

President Hassan Sheikh praised President Ruto for his ongoing support in state-building efforts in Somalia, as well as his contributions to the restoration of peace and stability in the region. The acknowledgment underscores the collaborative efforts between Kenya and Somalia in fostering security and governance.
