Qatar Charity (QC) has partnered with UNICEF to launch an emergency nutrition initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children in displacement camps around Mogadishu, Somalia. The project, which began recently, addresses malnutrition in one of the regions most affected by drought-induced displacement.
Qatar Charity Targeting Malnutrition in Crisis Areas
The project, expected to reach over 3,000 children aged six months to five years, has already provided aid to 500 children, QC announced on Monday. With Somalia facing high rates of child malnutrition due to prolonged drought, this program aims to mitigate the nutritional crisis in displacement camps, where children are most vulnerable.
Critical Need for Nutritional Support
According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), approximately 1.6 million children in Somalia could face acute malnutrition by mid-2025, with over 400,000 at risk of severe malnutrition. QC’s Somalia Director Abd al-Fattah Adam Moalim stressed the importance of delivering high-energy biscuits to enhance children’s immunity and promote growth. “This partnership with UNICEF is crucial in fighting malnutrition, providing these children with the essential nutrients needed for healthy development,” Moalim noted.
Local Support and Acknowledgment
The Health Directorate of Banadir Region, led by Abdirahman Ahmed Mohamud, acknowledged the timely support from QC and UNICEF. Mohamud emphasized the urgency of combating malnutrition among children and praised both organizations for their continued dedication to providing life-saving nutritional support.
Qatar Charity is Expanding Impact Through Health Centers and Youth Empowerment
In addition to direct nutrition aid, UNICEF supplies essential medicines and nutrition supplements to QC-operated health centers in Mogadishu and the Bay region. UNICEF and QC are also advancing the “Upshift” program, empowering 180 young people from various communities with funding and mentorship to enhance their skills, boost personal development, and improve employability.
