Three senior Qatari officials lost their lives in a tragic car accident near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Qatari Embassy in Cairo has confirmed. In a statement released on Sunday, the embassy said that all three victims were employees of the Amiri Diwan, the administrative office of Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The embassy described the incident as a “tragic traffic accident” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the officials had been carrying out their official duties at the time of the crash.
According to the statement, two other officials sustained injuries in the same accident and are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh. The embassy extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and offered prayers for the injured, asking God to grant mercy to those who died and a quick recovery to those who were hurt. “The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Cairo extends its heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathies to the families of the deceased, praying that God envelops them in His vast mercy, accepts them in Paradise, and grants the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
The embassy did not provide specific details about the cause of the accident or the identities of the victims. However, the loss has drawn deep sympathy both within Qatar and from diplomatic circles in the region, where the officials were well respected for their service to the Amiri Diwan. The Amiri Diwan serves as the executive office of the Emir, handling administrative and ceremonial duties related to the leadership of the State of Qatar.
Sharm el-Sheikh, located on the southern tip of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, is a major international hub for diplomatic meetings and high-level conferences. The area has been in the global spotlight in recent days as it hosted negotiations for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, aimed at ending the ongoing war in Gaza. It is also expected to host an upcoming global summit focused on finalising the terms of that ceasefire.
While authorities have not officially linked the Qatari officials’ presence in Sharm el-Sheikh to these diplomatic efforts, Qatar has been one of the key mediators in the talks, alongside Egypt and the United States. The country has played an active role in facilitating negotiations to reach humanitarian pauses and prisoner exchange agreements during the Gaza conflict.
News of the accident has prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences across Qatar and beyond. The tragedy underscores the risks often faced by officials serving abroad in demanding diplomatic and administrative roles. Qatar’s government and its embassy in Cairo have reiterated their solidarity with the families affected, highlighting the commitment and dedication of the officials who lost their lives while on duty.
As the injured continue to receive treatment, both Egyptian and Qatari authorities are expected to carry out further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The embassy expressed hope that the injured will recover soon and that the souls of the departed will rest in peace.
The tragic loss has cast a shadow over the diplomatic activities taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh, where the atmosphere has been one of grief and sympathy for the Qatari delegation. The officials’ contributions to the Amiri Diwan and their service to Qatar are being remembered with deep respect and appreciation by their colleagues and the wider Qatari community.
