Residents of Hargeisa, Somaliland, took to the streets on Monday, December 9, 2024, to protest against Mayor Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, accusing him of failing to deliver on his 2021 campaign promises. The mayor had pledged to green the city, build paved roads, and create safer pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. However, protesters argue that little progress has been made, sparking widespread frustration in the city.
A Mayor’s Promises Unfulfilled
Elected in 2021 with overwhelming public support, Mayor Mooge’s campaign focused on urban transformation, promising tree-lined streets, efficient drainage systems, and improved infrastructure. His vision inspired hope for a more livable and sustainable Hargeisa. However, critics now allege that the mayor has failed to follow through.
“Mayor, come and be accountable,” said Khadar Hambabar, a taxi driver participating in the protest in the Xera-Awr neighborhood. “I pay my taxes, but my car is stuck in the garage. Where are the services we were promised?”
Protests Spread Across Neighborhoods
Demonstrations erupted in several neighborhoods, including Kodbuur, 26 June, and Gacan Libaax. Many of the protesters were initially fervent supporters of Mayor Mooge, but their disappointment over unfulfilled promises has led to mounting criticism.
Among those voicing their concerns is prominent poet Hassan Dahir Weedhsame, who declared on social media, “This mayor will be held accountable. Even the strongest guards cannot shield him from the people’s scrutiny.”
Government Response Escalates Tensions
The mayor has yet to respond to the protests, remaining silent despite mounting calls for accountability. In response to the unrest, government authorities moved to suppress demonstrations, citing security concerns. However, residents argue that such measures only deepen their frustrations and erode trust in local leadership.
A City Yearning for Change
The protests reflect broader concerns about governance and public accountability in Hargeisa. Residents, including business owners and community leaders, argue that without improved infrastructure, the city’s potential for growth and development remains stifled.
While Mayor Mooge’s silence persists, demonstrators continue to demand transparency and concrete action to address the city’s pressing needs.
