Safiya Saeed has been appointed as the 128th Lord Mayor of Sheffield, making history as the first Black woman wearing a hijab to hold the ceremonial title. The Labour Party councillor for Burngreave was officially inaugurated during Sheffield City Council’s Annual General Meeting, marking a significant milestone in the city’s political landscape.
Saeed, who arrived in Sheffield from Somaliland in 1985, has long been an advocate for community development and youth empowerment. Her journey to the mayoral seat has been shaped by years of grassroots activism, including her work as the founder of Reach Up Youth, a project dedicated to supporting young people from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds. The initiative provides leadership training, professional development, and mental health support, helping young individuals navigate challenges and build confidence.
During her acceptance speech, Saeed expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve Sheffield in this capacity. “I am honored to be the first Black woman wearing a hijab to take this role,” she stated. “This city has truly become my home, a place where I have always felt I belong.” Her family, including relatives who traveled from Somaliland, attended the ceremony at Sheffield Town Hall to celebrate the historic moment.
Saeed’s tenure as Lord Mayor will focus on fostering civic engagement and strengthening community networks. She has outlined a vision centered on inclusivity, ensuring that Sheffield’s diverse population feels represented and heard. “I want every voice, no matter how quiet, to feel heard in the heart of this city,” she emphasized. Her theme for the year revolves around building partnerships between investors, entrepreneurs, charities, and residents, aiming to transform Sheffield into a thriving hub of collaboration and opportunity.
Beyond her political career, Saeed has held several leadership roles within the council, including serving as Deputy Lord Mayor and Chair of the North East Local Area Committee. Her experience in governance and community outreach has positioned her as a strong advocate for social change, particularly in areas related to youth development and minority representation.
The role of Lord Mayor in Sheffield is largely ceremonial, with responsibilities focused on representing the city at official events and promoting civic pride.
