Somali Danab Commandos kill senior Al-Shabaab leader in Lower Shabelle region, dealing a major blow to the extremist group’s operational network in southern Somalia. The elite special forces unit, backed by intelligence from the Somali National Army (SNA), launched a precision raid in the Bariire area that resulted in the death of a top militant commander and eight of his bodyguards.
The slain militant, identified only as Jaabir, was described by government officials as Al-Shabaab’s chief explosives expert in the region. According to a statement from the Federal Government of Somalia, Jaabir was responsible for orchestrating deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attacks targeting civilians, security forces, and infrastructure across Lower Shabelle.
The operation, conducted under the cover of darkness, also led to the destruction of several Al-Shabaab hideouts, bunkers, and weapons caches. Officials say the raid was the result of weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, aimed at dismantling the group’s bomb-making and logistics hub in Bariire.
“This was a meticulously planned strike that neutralized one of the most dangerous figures in Al-Shabaab’s hierarchy,” said a senior military official. “Jaabir’s death will significantly disrupt the group’s ability to carry out IED attacks in the region.”
The Danab Commandos, trained by international partners including the United States, have become a cornerstone of Somalia’s counterterrorism strategy. Their ability to conduct rapid, high-impact operations has earned them a reputation as one of the most effective units in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

Lower Shabelle has long been a stronghold for the militant group, serving as a launchpad for attacks on Mogadishu and other urban centers. The region’s dense terrain and proximity to the capital make it a strategic priority for Somali forces seeking to reclaim territory and restore civilian governance.
Residents of Bariire reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions during the operation, which lasted several hours. By morning, security forces had secured the area and begun clearing remaining threats. Local elders praised the operation, calling it a necessary step toward peace and stability.
“This is a victory for the people of Lower Shabelle,” said one community leader. “We have lived in fear for too long. The removal of this terrorist leader gives us hope.”
The Somali government has vowed to intensify its military campaign against Al-Shabaab, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterating his administration’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and restoring national unity. The latest operation is part of a broader offensive that has seen Somali forces reclaim dozens of towns and villages across southern and central Somalia.
Despite these gains, Al-Shabaab remains a potent threat. The group continues to carry out suicide bombings, ambushes, and targeted assassinations, often blending into local communities to evade detection. Security analysts warn that while leadership decapitation strikes are effective, long-term stability will require sustained investment in governance, development, and reconciliation.
As Somalia prepares for the 2026 elections, the government is under pressure to demonstrate progress in securing the country and protecting its citizens. The successful elimination of Jaabir is likely to be touted as a key achievement in that effort.
