The Somali National Army (SNA), in coordination with the Ma’awisley clan militia, is gearing up for a large-scale military offensive to reclaim Aden Yabaal district in the Middle Shabelle region from Al-Shabaab. The strategic town has been under militant control for months, serving as a key stronghold for the extremist group’s operations in central Somalia.
Military sources report increased troop movements and logistical preparations around Aden Yabaal, signaling an imminent push against Al-Shabaab fighters entrenched in the area. The operation is being led by senior officials, including the Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and the Commander of the SNA Land Forces, General Sahal Abdullahi Omar.
General Sahal emphasized the importance of the offensive, stating, “We visited our forces and the local Ma’awisley fighters during the early stages of this new operation. Their dedication and sacrifice to defend Somalia are commendable.” He urged military officers and civilians to intensify collaboration and maintain pressure on Al-Shabaab as the operation enters a critical phase.
Aden Yabaal has long been a strategic hub for Al-Shabaab, enabling the group to launch attacks across central Somalia. Regaining control of the town would significantly weaken the militants’ grip in the region and boost the morale of pro-government forces. The offensive follows heightened anti-Al-Shabaab operations in Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and Southwest, where federal troops and allied militias have launched coordinated efforts to dismantle the group’s network.

Al-Shabaab, designated as a terrorist organization by the Somali government, the United Nations, and the United States, continues to carry out bombings, assassinations, and ambushes across Somalia despite sustained military pressure. The group has relied on Aden Yabaal as a logistical base, making its recapture a priority for Somali forces.
The Ma’awisley militia, named after the traditional sarong worn by its fighters, has played a crucial role in community-led resistance against Al-Shabaab. Though operating independently, the militia receives logistical support and encouragement from the Somali federal government, which views it as a key partner in efforts to reclaim rural territory.
Security analysts note that the upcoming offensive could mark a turning point in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab, potentially shifting the balance of power in the Middle Shabelle region. However, challenges remain, including the risk of militant counterattacks and the need for sustained stabilization efforts once the town is liberated.
As Somali forces finalize preparations, the government has reiterated its commitment to eliminating Al-Shabaab’s presence and restoring security across the country. The success of the Aden Yabaal offensive will be closely watched, with implications for broader counterterrorism efforts in Somalia.
