Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalan Abdi Ali Dhaay met with Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia W. Mudavadi on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Ministers’ Summit, reinforcing diplomatic and economic collaboration between the two nations. The high-level talks focused on deepening bilateral relations, advancing trade agreements, and enhancing regional security efforts.
During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cultural and socioeconomic ties, emphasizing the importance of stability and development in the Horn of Africa. Minister Ali expressed Somalia’s appreciation for Kenya’s unwavering support over the past 25 years, particularly in peacekeeping efforts under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Mudavadi, in turn, reiterated Kenya’s dedication to fostering strong neighborly relations and expanding cooperation in key sectors.
A major outcome of the discussions was the decision to expedite the convening of the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) to finalize crucial Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across multiple industries, including trade, security, education, and infrastructure. Both governments view these agreements as essential to unlocking new economic opportunities and reinforcing diplomatic ties.
The meeting was attended by Somalia’s Ambassador to China, Hodan Osman Abdi, and Kenya’s Ambassador to China, Willy Bett, highlighting the strategic importance of the discussions in shaping future engagements between the two nations. The presence of senior diplomats underscored the commitment of both governments to ensuring long-term collaboration.
Kenya and Somalia have historically shared deep-rooted connections, with their relationship evolving through mutual interests in regional stability and economic growth. The FOCAC Summit provided a platform for both nations to align their priorities with China’s broader investment initiatives in Africa, further strengthening their positions in global trade and development.
As Somalia continues to rebuild its economy and enhance its diplomatic outreach, its partnership with Kenya remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy.
